From a broad practice to a clear position

From a broad practice to a clear position

How Simply Dom brought its broad practice back to a recognisable position, without forcing different assignments under one artificial professional label.

The situation

The question was not what Simply Dom did. By then, that was fairly clear. The harder part was explaining why such different assignments logically belonged under the same company.

Over a few years, Simply Dom had become broader than the description it originally started with.

There was still communication and content. But also business development, research, analytics, research and validation of product ideas, complex commercial dossiers and internal process work.

The business question

Trying to push all of that under one new label would mostly have made the problem look neater.

So the repositioning did not start with a slogan.

The first question was fairly simple: what are we actually brought in to do?

Not what a services page said, but what clients actually put on the table.

There was more coherence than it first appeared.

In one assignment, communication needed direction. In another, a commercial question needed research first. Elsewhere, information from data, emails, documents or processes had to become usable before a sound decision could follow.

The final output varied each time; the role Simply Dom played varied much less.

The choices made

The temptation is to give all of it a name broad enough to fit.

Strategic advice. Business consultancy. Creative strategy. Marketing.

But none of those labels described well enough what was actually happening. They made some assignments easier to recognise and others harder to explain.

So we did not look for one discipline that could contain everything.

My role

The question was reversed: what pattern keeps returning, regardless of the type of assignment?

Something stands out, we work out what it means, and only once facts, context and uncertainties together produce a sharper business question do we decide what direction and execution are needed. It was not a model designed in advance — it became visible by looking at the work that was already there.

Execution

A positioning is worth little if only the person who wrote it understands what it means.

That is why the website was not built around a long list of services.

The Work cases show concrete assignments and choices. The Insights explain the ideas and observations behind that work. The Approach page shows how we move from question to direction and execution.

That means one sentence no longer has to carry everything.

What was deliberately not done

With that came a stricter boundary.

No adding services because they sound professional. No suggesting results that have not been demonstrated. No making a technical, legal or analytical role bigger than it really is. And no confusing breadth with “we can do everything”.

Result / impact

The exercise did not create a completely new Simply Dom.

It mainly made more explicit what had already grown.

Simply Dom often becomes useful when a company senses that something needs to happen but does not yet know which question must be answered first or which information is missing.

Very different assignments can grow from that.

The difference now is that this breadth no longer has to be hidden behind a single discipline.

The domain name already existed.

The positioning simply had to grow towards it:
